Dec 23, 2008 - I just don't get why all of these guys don't keep their hands up for protection. Even when I'm free sparring we are told to always keep our hands up and it's true. 90% of these guys WOULD NOT get kicked in the head if they would just keep their hands up. Yeah you can't always block the back pivot kicks but the roundhouses are cake.

Dec 24, 2008 - if you block with your hands the other dude would break them or bend them too his target this guys can break your bones

Dec 26, 2008 - Many people still don't understand difference between fists with gloves and fists without gloves. You can block the kicks to face. But without gloves, your fists can't resist the kicks. That means you will be knockout although you block.

Dec 29, 2008 - Just think about it logically based on the rules of Olympic TaeKwondo. Keeping your guard up is to mainly protect your head especially from punches which can be harder to react to then kicks. Since punching the head is illegal and a higher guard would actually limit your vision and mobility, these fighters choose to rely on speed and counter-kicks, you may even say similar to Muhammad Ali. Also lower arms probably help defend the torso which is a much easier target for points.
FLGator26 Says:
Dec 29, 2008 - Very true, I see your point. But you would think that if they kept their hands up they could push to the side alot of sidekicks while side stepping then counter kicking, something I do ALOT when I free spar. I would also keep them up to help prevent myself from getting spin kicked in the head or something.
dtester Says:
Dec 30, 2008 - that is very possible, if one guy can successful demostrate this in a real competition you will probably see a shift in styles to copy it. ...I think a high guard probably has a history of giving up torso points...but a close mid-level guard might have potential which is what you are thinking about as well.

Jan 3, 2009 - mm.. yeah its true that if their hands are up high that it covers that head but what about the body? and it'll be hard to move in and out if your hands are high. olympic sparring is more about speed
FLGator26 Says:
Jan 3, 2009 - Well that's kind what I'm trying to say. If you keep your hands at least up to your chest you can both push kicks away that are coming at you and you can quickly throw an arm up to block a head kick. That's how I do it when I sparr and it works perfectly while not henduring your speed or agility.
stivka Says:
Jan 3, 2009 - damn at 1:19 all that spit 0_o
wayofmu Says:
Jan 4, 2009 - Hands up to chest is fine. But don't talk about guarding up which is hiding face behind gloves. That's useless and not safe in real fight. If you guard up like muay thai fighters or kick boxers, your enemy will kick your groin, and then you will never be a father or a mother. In real fight without gloves, avoiding kicks will be safer than blocking kicks because your hands without gloves can't resist kicks.
funkyspydercrew Says:
Jan 4, 2009 - in taekwon do sparring you cant punch for the face so really theres no point for gloves
Andersthorupschmidt Says:
Jan 4, 2009 - Gloves are for protecting your fingers/hands against kicks.
wayofmu Says:
Jan 5, 2009 - That's true. But it is also true that kick boxers hide faces behind gloves to protect faces. They can't hide face without gloves in real fight because fists are very small and not soft.

Dec 18, 2008 - Sport is sport and street is street. Sure the sports and martial arts will help and make a person be better prepared for a street fight, but street is mainly luck. Think about it, in the street you have multiple opponents, weapons, and extremely unfavorable fighting conditions. Ever take some guy to the ground and have him whip out a knife? What about when his friend comes up and kicks the shit out of you? There's no honor or conduct in the street. I like TKD. Flexability and Strength.
