Oct 13, 2008 - Study neither. You need something that teaches an eye-gouging-ear-biting-flesh-ripping doctrine if you want to survive. NOT these holistic and yogic fighting arts like Systema. Just be cognizant that complex systems utilizing fine-motor coordinations not the answer, simplistic and elemental "combatives" are what you're looking for. Try researching Col. Applegate, William Fairbairn, Kelly McCann, & Eric Sykes. The best thing about them, they have validated combat credentials to back them up.

Oct 18, 2008 - "Just be cognizant that complex systems utilizing fine-motor coordinations not the answer, simplistic and elemental "combatives" are what you're looking for." Without agreeing or disagreeing with this statement I just want to mention that Systema is very much about movement and principle and very little about fine motor skills. If that isn't obvious from the videos then try a couple of classes and everything should clear right up for you.
SmilingRoger Says:
Oct 22, 2008 - Krav maga or combat sambo
Thorolf9 Says:
Oct 24, 2008 - different MA work for different people. Try them yourself to decide I'd say that's the best way
mytstact1 Says:
Nov 1, 2008 - That is not rue. Using UFC rules, MMA guy they will defeat them. They will pool the Muay Thai guy on the floor and finish him there by submission. They will punch sambo/judo guy in the face strongly enough to disrupt their throws. Also MMA is probably one of the oldest Martial Arts in the world. Check on the ancient Olympic sport called Pankration.
mytstact1 Says:
Nov 1, 2008 - Yet MMA guy will defend any of them if competition is based on MMA rules. Or street rules :) BTW check on Pankration ancient Olympic sport (This is how MMA was called then)
Pokemonzza Says:
Nov 2, 2008 - Ага понятно.... это ответ всем кто сомневается в практической применимости системы... Васильев конечно чудо !
bangermccrusher Says:
Nov 3, 2008 - I´ve used systema in bjj and mt schools and I´ve done pretty well but still this is not for competing. Common people there is a world outside the ufc. I love mma and practice it, but I also love systema and they are 2 different things BTW not even boxers hit as hard as a well trained systema guy, if you dont believe me go ask vladimir vasiliev to punch you and once you cry like a little baby come back and post.
xingyimaster1987 Says:
Nov 4, 2008 - wat martial art are you talking about
richardshapiroII Says:
Nov 7, 2008 - amen brother. I went to a seminar with vlad and asked him a question about striking. oh man, he showed me. the guy can hit like a tank, and its also very focused and controlled, he isn't just swinging, he is applying pressure very precisely. it may look kinda funny, but it is the real deal.
AnderssonNewgrounds Says:
Nov 14, 2008 - I have been active and/or am active in several kinds of 'martial arts', some of them being Muay Thai, Krav Maga, boxing, MMA and Systema. All I can say is that every type of martial art teaches their ways of handling trouble. What I want to add to that statement is that practising Systema is complementing my fighting skills a lot. But if you do not believe that Systema is something for you, maybe you aren't open-minded, I dunno whatever your reason is, however don't bother training it.
AnderssonNewgrounds Says:
Nov 14, 2008 - Exactly. It is wrong to say that Systema is a martial art. It is also wrong to say that Systema is self-defense training. All it is is survival.
dukenukem001 Says:
Nov 26, 2008 - If you want to be a good stand up fighter, box, if you want to be a good ground fighter wrestle or do ju-sitsu. These actually work and have been around for ages.
sigmacombatsystems Says:
Dec 1, 2008 - Boxing is a terrible stand up system, trust me I box. No knees, elbows, kicks, headbutts, bites, gouges, nothing. Just because something is old doesn't make it good. Wrestling on the street will result in getting stabbed or sued after you slam some clown on the pavement and break his back or arm or anything else now days. You have to use reasonable force, slams, dislocations, and breaks are legally complex.
ssviator Says:
Dec 9, 2008 - bjj is useless if you meet more then one opponent or if he has a weapon. when you're down on the ground another opponent will be kicking you in the head. Street fight and competition is very different.
swanmix10 Says:
Dec 10, 2008 - the mma guy will do great agianst a guy with a knife or against multiple aponents........ Yeah right. I love the mma but these 2 styles are very different. Systema is infinitly more effective than mma(ufc) If mma was so effective it would be umong the top military martial arts plus systema is easy to learn
swanmix10 Says:
Dec 10, 2008 - systema fighting styles are older than boxing. BY STYELs i mean in ancient russia the cuzacs and tartars used very similiar styles of fighting. during ww2 the styles were combined and updated to be more devastating
rounddeworld Says:
Dec 13, 2008 - You can't base the use of a different martial art based solely on the credentials of an elite few practitioners. That has nothing to do with how each martial art promotes the defense of the user. If that's your defense of these martial arts, you should have just said "get a gun."
swanmix10 Says:
Dec 13, 2008 - this martial art was desighned for fast learning. its basic premise is to master movement and defense advanced personel learn offense very quick lethal attacks
StylexSai Says:
Dec 14, 2008 - Yeah, but their quick relexes and speed makes up for everything.
tapthis Says:
Jan 6, 2009 - Wouldnt call most if these sparring...
recshooter Says:
Jan 6, 2009 - Really? Why not?
tapthis Says:
Jan 6, 2009 - In 0.44 and 2.02 (fatso doing some kind of wing chun?) they are not trying to hit each other at all. The same goes for the clips with Vladimir... They are "sparring in the air" without aliveness and contact. The goal is very unclear and there is no meaning to do sparing without a goal. Of course sparring doesnt have to mean full contact - but it must be alive and with intent.
recshooter Says:
Jan 6, 2009 - I will agree Ryabko and Spyrokat (he's on youtube) aren't going "full contact" but there are, as you said, varying degrees of sparring. Vladimir is making contact here, I don't get what you mean about him. You are certainly entitled to your opinion.

Sep 20, 2008 - I was a JKD practitioner, And I dont feel need to return to drills, skills, and practices of JKD, Systema is more complete, integral, wide, and is a MA that you can use when you become older..BTW if you can choose, try Keysi, is more close to JKD philosophy, than many methods of JKD training today
