Aug 12, 2008 - Anybody heard of a band called Joy Of cooking who opened for the rest of Big Brother after Janis died? They were so great that I bought their record on the way out the door: The Holding Company sucked.
netmdfreek2004 Says:
Aug 13, 2008 - joy of cooking is great
LaVendogeinne Says:
Sep 9, 2008 - for netdmfreek2004, hey you mean they still exist? My vinyl is long gone, but lord I'd love to hear those harmonies again! Where can I find them?
Bogframe Says:
Sep 27, 2008 - This is precisely what's wrong with the CD and radio industry today. All the "chart toppers" get CD releases and airplay, while brilliant bands like Moby Grape, The Fugs et al are left by the wayside to be forgotten. Damn shame. Thank G-d for YouTube.
WDockery Says:
Oct 3, 2008 - Excellent stuff, the misunderstood genius of Moby Grape.

Oct 9, 2008 - Being from the tail end of the babyboom I remember the name Moby Grape and have been sampling them on this web site. I know that mostly their fans will watch this vid and see this posting but I have to say that this band takes itself much too seriously. The pseudo-intellect hippiness that this weak sound tries to project is cliché and a bore. Sorry if that offends but it now explains why they were used in Beavis and Butthead as a favorite band of the hippy teacher Mr. Van Drissen.

Oct 18, 2008 - ...oh yes, the sounds of 'The Grape' bouncing off the walls at the Fillmore & Winterland. Great times :>) Then there was the time at Lake Tahoe; while MG was playing, S Spence broke, came down off stage, layed down on the floor w/ us, & helped us finish up some reefer...lol, then casually went back up & continued playing...cracked us up!
Poehr Says:
Oct 21, 2008 - The Peter Lewis song drags a bit, but "Hey Grandma" is a total rush! Great to see Skip so alive and pumped! I'm not sure Moby Grape were the epochal band that some people think they were, but when they were good they were very very good. This is a great bit of footage.
Pastpickerpresent Says:
Nov 5, 2008 - One fantastic, talented, and creative band, with a fraternal comradery, from " The Mystical Era". The energy that exsudes from their first record is ledgendary among liked minded musicians from the times... Jerry's Guitar, Bob's voice and bass playing, Don's drumming, Skip's energy, and Peter's voice and musicality. All together with their collective arrangement , A collective great thing ! Too bad the Management and record company blew it!
PatOShea Says:
Nov 16, 2008 - Their first lp is better than anything the Dead ever recorded, take THAT deadheads!
Arkady63 Says:
Nov 16, 2008 - I am not a Deadhead. But now that I see this vid again - thanks your reply - I can honestly say that I have never seen a more self-absorbed and self-important group of bores play guitars. This stuff is dull and very weak. Just listen to the arrogance in the voice of the presenter who mentions a "song for all ages." LOL!!! If they do say so themselves!
Arkady63 Says:
Nov 16, 2008 - Yes, these men bridge not only the generation gap, but the geography gap? What is a "geography gap?" Do they make it easier to cross geographic gaps? LMFAO!!! Yes, these were men with a deep and sincere mission! Closing geographic gap - like bridging the Grand Canyon - was a thing they were born to do. Ah, the misunderstood prophets....
PatOShea Says:
Nov 16, 2008 - Self important bores on guitars,eh how about The Eagles? We can all agree they suck, right?
Arkady63 Says:
Nov 16, 2008 - True, The Eagles have made being full of one's self an art form. But at least they waited to sell a few records first. And single handedly bridging the generation and "geography" gaps? Good lord, Jesus himself would've been proud. Listen, I mean no offense to anyone who's a fan of Moby Grape. But this whole deep-sense-of-purpose thing they had going is kind of silly to me. And calling themselves wonderful before anyone else did besides maybe their girlfriends or mothers is dull.
tedplaysguitar Says:
Nov 21, 2008 - I interviewed Robert Plant a few years back on a local UK radio station and he talked about how much the Grape had influenced all of Led Zeppelin with their sound and ideas. It's easy to take a lazy swipe at the Grape but when their legendary peers sing their praises only those with an agenda will hack away with hijacked semantics. True, CBS hyped them beyond belief, but that was not their fault. The Grape were in a small way influences to some of the biggest acts and there is a legacy.
ortleyman Says:
Nov 22, 2008 - Has anyone ever scene the movie "The Sweet Ride." There's a scene where the Grape perform at this club in Malibu and their performance is off the hook. Loved it.

homonculus9 Says:
Dec 3, 2008 - They'll always be Skippy's band. R.I.P Alexander the Great.
abrahamlincoln0900 Says:
Dec 5, 2008 - Moby Grape is the best band out of the city and the era!imo
Sargebri Says:
Dec 21, 2008 - They got royally screwed with Columbia's misguided hype campaign, which include simultaneously releasing every song as a single. That immediately turned them into an industry joke and ruined them forever.
RockinGhostTown Says:
Dec 22, 2008 - I m sad that young ppl dont really know this band. they are so amazing ..and very original..
FlowtnWitWalden Says:
Dec 23, 2008 - i'm no alpha intelect; but i think "bridging the geography gap," refers to bridging the locales where U.S. country music was more widely appreciated (middle & souther states) with the variety of tastes appreciated on the coasts. putting this in its time perspective of the late 60's, Eisenhower's push to complete the interstate highway system was just fully blooming. just a few decades earlier a trip from L.A. to Kansas City or Nashville would've been experienced by a minority of U.S. citizens.
doughnutbreath Says:
Jan 6, 2009 - Actually, I'd say more 'young people' know about Moby Grape and Oar today than 'old people' did back then. They were swept under the carpet pretty quickly leaving us to uncover and enjoy them.
pernicketty Says:
Jan 6, 2009 - Beautiful religious peace and love to the bonehead who screwed the 'Sitting by the window' clip for all time by waving his stupid-ass hand in front of the camera.
