Jan 19, 2008 - well i have short skinny fingers so I had difficulty doing it at first too. I never took classes so my technique is not perfect either. But what I suggest is to keep doing it the "normal" way and eventually you'll get it. I now have calluses on the side of my index.

Jan 19, 2008 - The tip of my index doesn't touch the frets while some people do so it depends. You can try the Jimmy Page, Jimi Hendrix technique... if your finger are long. Instead of barring they use their thumb to barre the E-A strings and the index to barre the B-e strings. The index and thumb grasp around the guitar neck. I hope this helps ;)

Jan 19, 2008 - It's sort of like travis picking. The idea to keep in mind here is that my thumb and the rest of my fingers are completely independent. My thumb keeps the rhythm and the bass, while the fingers play the melody. A trick here is to pick with your thumb at a constant rhythm. Make it second nature 'till you don't think about your thumb anymore. When you get the hand of that start playing the melody with the fingers.
