It's actually true, and there are two theories why. 1: They didn't like the censorship on their songs so they slyly put in it 2: They decided it would be funny to slip it in and notice if anyone would notice. I read the second one in a Beatles recording log book, the first is the story i've heard and read everywhere else.

Nov 19, 2008 - and also about yellow submarine... a submarine is when you smoke weed, drink something while holding the smoke and then breath out, in that song around 1:30 you can hear them inhaling, putting the ice in the glass, pouring the drinks, drinking and releasing the smoke. its cool! i dont do drugs but is cool realizing all the hidden messages in this songs and being offended by them is silly i think.
