Nov 15, 2008 - what makes your interpretation any more true than Thoughtracer's? Just wondering! Did Ed tell you this, did you read this interpretation in Spin magazine? No harm meant. I'm just curious why yours is so right...if its just, well...yours! In which case, so is any other persons interpretation. Why is your opinion of lyrical meaning better than anothers?

Nov 15, 2008 - I don't know the meaning of this song, but I have listened to Live pretty much since their debut almost 20 years ago now (ack! getting old). I thought Ed was Buddhist? Whatever the case, I never considered them a Christian band, but if the lyrics have that meaning to some people, then good for them. Whatever makes the song more enjoyable to you, I suppose.

Nov 15, 2008 - owow. Youtube screwed up my comment. I'm going to go through this briefly (probably in two comments actually,) because I don't feel like repeating myself. It's not better because it's my interpretation, I'd consider it better only because a person needs to look at all the lines in a song and not pick and choose so that they can create their own meaning. I think the, "I alone love you, I alone tempt you" line completely crushes Thoughtracer's guess at the meaning, as that does not sound like

Nov 15, 2008 - something god would say. etc etc. I mean, if we want to ignore the "Greatest of teachers won't hesitate to leave you there by yourself" (... greatest of teachers... Jesus? Abandoning?) and the fact the speaker is telling someone not to read for themselves, that they'll interpret for you, okay, we can ignore several important lines. I guess? But that's not really interpretating, is it? I'd say more likely, if it wasn't a poke at the Church, cause you say it's a Christian band,
aliciaftw Says:
Nov 15, 2008 - it could be from the pov of Satan speaking to Adam and Eve in the garden. That would actually make a lot of sense, as in the music video there's a snake in the tree. Then towards of the end of the song, "only love can save us now" would be referring to the downfall of men, and the dependency on God's love. It mentions Eden in the start of the song too. I could believe that one, personally.

Nov 15, 2008 - Ok...Live is Christian...not that they are nominally part of "christian rock"...but it is all over their lyrics (not EVERY song, of course). I don't know why people are being UN-receptive to your point. My friend knows Ed..and yes, its true! Like it or leave it my friends!
