This animated short film was created in 2006 by American animator Patrick Smith. It is a story about a young man who creates a hand puppet that hurts him in increasingly gruesome and bizarre ways. It is a story of desperation, fear, and an ever-present question: does the puppet have a mind of its own, or does the hand want to control it this way? Nov 22, 2008 - I'm not so sure there's much "trying to convince yourself" when it gets at this point. It's mostly unconscious and natural, and (this is only my guess) it's caused by focusing on resentment or other negativity instead of finding ways to release or burn off the resentment. That's not in the film though. I'm only spewing what I seem to have learned. Not sure if I'm right, but I hope it helps.

Nov 22, 2008 - It's not about being controlled by hand puppets. The puppets, I think, and not to be taken literally. They are a metaphor for what a person creates when his anger level has gotten self-destructive.

Nov 22, 2008 - Actually, I'm worse than this cartoon dude. I wish I'd known better, and I did try to know better, but all attempts failed. I have no tolerance for the word "masochist," either, although I suppose it's the proper word. This process happens unwittingly. Nobody sets out to become this way on purpose. I don't think ... well, now I'm arguing with meself and making meself into talking puppets so I'll STFU.

Dec 31, 2008 - I was thinking it would have been cool if at the end when his friends help him up, that his friends turn into doctors and take the main guy back to his room, then it would look like he was a mental patient at a care hospital and the puppets were only in his immagination. In beginning it mentions self abuse, so the main character would be like a guy that got put in the mental institution because he is abusive towards himself. I really loved it, along with all your other animations. -Megan Mae
