Dec 25, 2008 - yeah so the world bank wants to step in and save the day and loan them millions of dollars and I wonder what the rate of interest it will have to be paid back to them....crazy
kittykattykoo Says:
Dec 26, 2008 - I've got to dedicate myself to solve this. Seriously.
kittykattykoo Says:
Dec 26, 2008 - To solve this problem, I would recommend: 1.Organized solid waste segregation, collection, and incineration, preferably combined with biogas plant to produce energy instead of contributing more greenhouse gases. 2.Total reconstruction of the whole area, starting from the shore. But I'm afraid, even IF these are accomplished, the issues of poverty, lack of access to education, and corruption will only make these solution unsustainable. But I have to be an optimist because this is my hometown!
dsheffields Says:
Dec 27, 2008 - One thing to be addressed is the money issue which certainly lead into corruption fully embedded within the government. who will support all the solutions financially and who will have the best aptitude to handle the money?
randy106 Says:
Dec 27, 2008 - the problem is that Indonesian government is not that rich enough to just reconstruct everything!
okaki Says:
Dec 27, 2008 - @randy106: Rich enough yes definitely, but all our money went into their private pockets

Dec 27, 2008 - Sigh. It's sad to see this clip. I am going to Jakarta in 2 weeks and I hope there's no flood. Anyway IMHO we should (1) Stop building new malls dammit.(2) Move the capital city somewhere else to hopefully reduce the immigration into Jakarta. I don't see why this cannot be done.(3) Listen to these overseas experts and do everything they tell us to prevent Jakarta permanently flooded. (4) And the easiest: clean the gutters and rivers regularly. Do not throw rubbish there. God Bless Jakarta.
jafrocubic Says:
Dec 28, 2008 - I love Indonesia. That's important for what I am about to say mainly because it's the premise.I fucking hate Jakarta!I've lived here for a year.Rather than it being a year of living dangerously, it's been more of a year of perpetual disappointment.I find this city a sad representation of the most wonderful country I have ever been to.I find it a sad representation of what people in the modern age can be and should strive for.The ruling elite bear a huge amount of the responsibility.Continued....
jafrocubic Says:
Dec 28, 2008 - Obviously the government is corrupt. That has turned into the common excuse, a way for people themselves to avoid any kind of responsibility. What's choking the roads in Jakarta besides the floods? All the huge developments for the rich (i.e. malls and places like Kemang Village). What is displacing more people right now than any flood?Huge developments for the rich (i.e. malls and places like Kemang Village).I see no hope for change, sadly, because these people play hand in hand with the government
jafrocubic Says:
Dec 28, 2008 - Before I moved to Jakarta, I spent much time in the remote parts of the country as a traveler.Occasionally I would bump into another foreigner who had spent far more time in the country than I had or someone working for a NGO.Commonly they would explain to me how Indonesia and Jakarta in particular would only get worse before they got better.I thought it was extremely negative, destructive, and cynical rhetoric at the time. Now that I have experienced this city, however; I find it true. Sadly.
jafrocubic Says:
Dec 28, 2008 - So I guess my love of this country is not really the premise, but the reason for watching this video and posting my comments thereafter.Someone please reply and tell me I am totally wrong (using sound reasoning)and make me feel better about the future of this city.A feeling of impending doom and the negativity it brings has wrought me stress.:(
Ape65 Says:
Dec 29, 2008 - Actually, the answer is to tax the malls, condos and office towers so as to pay for dredging, water and sewage infrastructure and sea walls.

Jan 1, 2009 - .. so at what rate do sinkholes collapse? .. how does Jakarta's situation differ from a more dryland habitat like Orlando Florida? .. and isn't one aggravating problem flooding by falling water due to deforistationl? .. and isn't another aggravating problem falling land level due to pumping water? .. and another from weight of 'cultural' features? .. How much does each combination of these three factors maximize some defined benefit?

Dec 25, 2008 - I want no argument with you, Brother. You have completely misunderstood my comments. I have defended our Deen by pointing out that Christianity has a far more violent history than any other religion. I also brought up the history that under Islamic rule, Muslim Christian, and Jew lived in peace. How then, do you justify calling me a clown? Is that from the Sunnah? Please read my comments again. I know you are probably more fluent in Malay, so read again. Ma'as Salaam.
