Abstract from Kokubo et al. (2000) We investigate the evolution of a circumterrestrial disk of debris generated by a giant impact on the earth and the characteristics of the moon accreted from the disk by using high-resolution N-body simulation. We find that in most cases the disk evolution results in the formation of a single large moon on a nearly non-inclined circular orbit outside the Roche limit, which is consistent with the previous work by Ida et al. (1997). http://yso.mtk.nao.ac.jp/~kokubo/moon/kit/movie.html

Aug 30, 2007 - well, the composition of the materials in th rocks are very very similar to that of the earths. other celestrial bodys have vastley diffrent compositions.

Aug 30, 2007 - i do subscribe to the theory, look at other comment ijust now wrote

Sep 2, 2007 - and how many celestial bodies have we been too?

Sep 2, 2007 - I'm afraid for the theory to hold any water there needs to be something of evidence, not mere conjecture and specualtion

Sep 2, 2007 - astroids pieces have completely diffrent compositions (and we now have landed on a couple with machines) and mars is diffrent, mercury is diffren, etc. etc. etc. humans dont need to physicaly land on somthing to have knowledge about it. we have machines to do that.
mustang500e Says:
Sep 2, 2007 - do research, there is alota evidence.

Nov 8, 2007 - Capturing vs. consuming might have been dictated by the velocity of approach between the two worlds.

Nov 9, 2007 - look, it's nonsense, silly silly nonsense. there is nothing plausible or scientific about it.
Hottides Says:
Nov 9, 2007 - The theory's buttressed by the similarity in chemical composition and age of Terrestrial and Lunar materials. It's quite scientific and is accepted as the most probable mechanism for the Moon's formation among astrophysicists and geologists.

Feb 2, 2008 - it's true. the earth and the moon have the same isotopic concentration of oxygen that indicate that there is a genetic link between them. also the moon is primordial, and it is known that the youngest rocks on the moon are the same age as the oldest rocks on earth. and there is no organic composition on the moon..therefore the theory is correct even with a few draw backs. well its the most logical explanation for now.
Hottides Says:
Feb 2, 2008 - Much of the Earth's volatile material (organics, water) is thought to have been delivered through cometary impact. The Earth's greater gravity makes it a more successful comet capturer, which might account for its far greater organic material and water content relative to the Moon.

Mar 31, 2008 - you know they say that the earths core is there becouse of a great impact of an object that contained that metal core? maby this planet when it hit earth had this "core"... just thinking... but a planet that sise wold not move the earth from his rotation around the sun? well not totaly dislocate it, but if so, that ment we were to close (or to far) to/from the sun before this giant impact hapend, and this halped to create life!!!

May 22, 2008 - not everyone was enthusiastic about it it seems :) I wasn't either. it's a somewhat disappointing mix of a computer demo and perhaps some science. sure youtube videoquality is not great but perhaps it could have been better visualized meaning more visible. this theatrical look was a quite terrible choice and it's largely impossible to see anything happening. as for science, if there was any, I would much prefer that the simulation showed what happened rather than an arbitrary text screen

Nov 28, 2008 - It didn't make any sense to me. You show us an imminent impact of two huge planets. Then, the next moment we are watching an accretion disk forming around a huge solid planet??? What happened to the laws of physics?

Nov 30, 2008 - That's a fascinating equation! what the fuck does it mean?
Luigi84289 Says:
Dec 30, 2008 - the smaller planet's impact caused particles to be shot out all around the earth. These particles then aggregated very slowly at first until a sufficient gravitational difference was developed between some of them as they grew larger. this then caused a chain reaction resulting in our current moon.

Aug 30, 2007 - doesn't need to. The earth could have been just in the path of the object. (I don't subsribe to the theory)
