If a person is on the edge, their finger is less than an inch away from firing that gun, and a persons first reaction when they panic is to squeeze the gun, and squeeze it hard. Rookie police officers often have a problem with this themselves. You can be certain that that guy is going to go off when you're trying to do this, which is why you need to redirect.

Jan 8, 2009 - One thing about this technique, and indeed, any gun defense technique, is to remember that when the gun is fired that slide is going to blow back. If you're holding onto the slide, this might not be too much of a problem, but if your hand is where the hammer is, that slide can easily break the bones in your hand. Move quickly, and mind where your hands are, don't leave your hand hanging behind the slide if you take too long to get the gun away.

Jan 8, 2009 - 10 feet? No. 7 meters, yes. I go to the range about once a week, and most people have a hard time hitting a stationary head sized target at 7 yards, but they'll definitely hit it. If you're moving at 7 meters+, you're ok. 10 feet is almost nothing, it's practically point blank as it is.

Jan 9, 2009 - the problem with this technique is that most muggers will stand 5 - 10' away and ask you to put money/ valuables on the ground. If a mugger gets all up in someone's face like this, they might as well be using a hatchet or a knife.
