Published as "Canadian Railroad Trilogy", mp3 from the In-deb-ted Lightfoot Library, Gordon captured the great Canadian dream - a rail line from coast to coast. I have included images from railroad building in North and Central America. Link For online discussions about Gordon Lightfoot , his music and related topics http://www.corfid.com/ Link to Gordon Lightfoot website maintained by Wayne Francis http://www.lightfoot.ca/ There was a time in this fair land when the railroad did not run When the wild majestic mountains stood alone against the sun Long before the white man and long before the wheel When the green dark forest was too silent to be real But time has no beginnings and hist'ry has no bounds As to this verdant country they came from all around They sailed upon her waterways and they walked the forests tall And they built the mines the mills and the factories for the good of us all And when the young man's fancy was turnin' to the spring The railroad men grew restless for to hear the hammers ring Their minds were overflowing with the visions of their day And many a fortune lost and won and many a debt to pay For they looked in the future and what did they see They saw an iron road runnin' from sea to the sea Bringin' the goods to a young growin' land All up through the seaports and into their hands Look away said they across this mighty land From the eastern shore to the western strand Bring in the workers and bring up the rails We gotta lay down the tracks and tear up the trails Open 'er heart let the life blood flow Gotta get on our way 'cause we're movin' too slow Bring in the workers and bring up the rails We're gonna lay down the tracks and tear up the trails Open 'er heart let the life blood flow Gotta get on our way 'cause we're movin' too slow Get on our way 'cause we're movin' too slow Behind the blue Rockies the sun is declinin' The stars, they come stealin' at the close of the day Across the wide prairie our loved ones lie sleeping Beyond the dark oceans in a place far away We are the navvies who work upon the railway Swingin' our hammers in the bright blazin' sun Livin' on stew and drinkin' bad whiskey Bendin' our old backs 'til the long days are done We are the navvies who work upon the railway Swingin' our hammers in the bright blazin' sun Layin' down track and buildin' the bridges Bendin' our old backs 'til the railroad is done So over the mountains and over the plains Into the muskeg and into the rain Up the St. Lawrence all the way to Gaspe Swingin' our hammers and drawin' our pay Drivin' 'em in and tyin' 'em down Away to the bunkhouse and into the town A dollar a day and a place for my head A drink to the livin' and a toast to the dead Oh the song of the future has been sung All the battles have been won O'er the mountain tops we stand All the world at our command We have opened up the soil With our teardrops and our toil For there was a time in this fair land when the railroad did not run When the wild majestic mountains stood alone against the sun Long before the white man and long before the wheel When the green dark forest was too silent to be real When the green dark forest was too silent to be real And many are the dead men too silent to be real Link to buy Gordon Lightfoot CD's http://www.bestprices.com/cgi-bin/vlink/musicartists/cds-by-artist-Gordon-Lightfoot.html

Nov 17, 2008 - I'm Bruce who is studying in Carol's Enlish language class. The song made in 1967. The minor chords lets people felling gloomy. But the flash vedio is very simple and very poor because it doesn't have any lyrics. Although the song is so so, I don't like it very much because it is out of date. Other hands, the MV doesn't have any Chinese , we only can see a Canada Native people, I think its mislead the railway builder of us opinion.

Nov 22, 2008 - Great song - probably MY all-time-favourite of all his songs and really great pictures here that catch the mood of it! I think it fits that it is "only!" pictures and not video, works much more authentic this way!! Thanx Man, this will always be one of these songs I have so often heard driving along some highway with miriad pictures in my mind so very similar to those posted here!!

Nov 23, 2008 - I have liked Lightfoot for years. I'm still amazed at how he gets by with those rambling lyrics, lengthy recordings, two or three meter and tempo changes and lack of rhyme in his songs. Not the best of writers but a great interpreter of human feelings and historic facts. I have almost all of his recordings, probably as a study in "how not to be a conventional writer and artist"... I like most of them, however.

Nov 24, 2008 - One of my favourite Lightfoot tunes - I think he was commissioned to write it for the CBC in '67 for the centennial. coleyman is right that he is an excellent interpreter of human feelings and history, and he does it with such soul and authenticity in his voice. Great photos to accompany - great job. One suggestion though would be to include photos of the Chinese workers who contributed so much under such hardship. As Sir John A. said, "No Chinese, no railroad".

Nov 26, 2008 - i hate the white man, he killed the red man, the bear, the buffalo, and god knows what else, ... but i am white, and some of my heroes are white, not all of us are evil, so i am very confused, are we evil, or not?...life is so hard

Nov 27, 2008 - with all due respect..lightfoot is an amazing composer check out in this song how he uses certain cords to sculpt a certain feeling ,,thats no accident,,..he uses temp changes to invoke feelings..its pure genius ..and he use very complex chord prgressions!! and its so much a part of us Canadians- he paints pictures with sound and lyrics...

Nov 27, 2008 - I like how the Canadian railway didnt really "intrude" into the land, but seemingly just made it livable. And I cant even imagine going on a steam train trip through the rockies listening to this song. an instant heart jerker.

Nov 27, 2008 - Again, absolutely increadible man, song, and story.

Dec 2, 2008 - Your public schools probably don't tell you of the many species of animals the Indians exterminated. To hate your race is the liberal way. Open your eyes and see what the white race has contributed. After all, the human race is the ultimate species on Earth, and other species will therefore suffer.
WhyAyeMann Says:
Dec 5, 2008 - You probably misunderstood what i meant; i meant i cant imagine how great that would be to take a trip throught the rockies listening to this song.

Jan 7, 2009 - This is by far the most enjoyable look at the history of North American railroading. Gordon Lightfoot is brilliant in song and story telling, and the pictures offered by thomasj157 bring it all home to the heart. I can't wait to ride the steam trains again in Durango Colorado, Chama New Mexico, and White Pass and Yukon in Skagway Alaska! What a joy to watch and listen to. Beautiful!
